IDENTITY & HISTORY

The Sacred City of Messolonghi

Messolonghi holds a special place in modern Greek history. During the Exodus of 1826, the besieged inhabitants chose to break through the enemy lines rather than surrender.

Their sacrifice deeply moved public opinion across Europe and strengthened international support for the Greek struggle for independence.

The city is also closely associated with Lord Byron, who died in Messolonghi in 1824 while supporting the Greek cause.

THE LAGOON

A remarkable wetland

The Messolonghi–Aitoliko Lagoon is one of the largest and most important wetland systems in Greece. Its shallow waters, salt marshes and small islets support rich birdlife and a long tradition of lagoon fishing.

The traditional wooden houses built above the shallow water are known locally as pelades. They were originally used by fishermen and many are now also used by local families as simple summer retreats.

LOCAL FLAVOURS

Food shaped by the lagoon

Local cuisine is closely connected with the lagoon. Visitors may encounter fresh lagoon fish, eel, salt-cured fish and traditional dishes based on the area’s fishing heritage.

The best-known local delicacy is Avgotaracho Messolongiou, the protected bottarga produced from grey mullet roe.
